While it is important to spend time reflecting, strategizing and developing your vision, that vision isn’t worth the yellow pad it’s scribbled on unless you take action.  Realizing your vision requires work.

ATMC grant supports South Brunswick High School’s music program

BOILING SPRING LAKES, N.C. –  Learning to play a musical instrument is full of high notes and low notes; literally. But thanks to the new SmartMusic software purchased through a Smart Connections Grant from ATMC, students in the music program at South Brunswick High School (SBHS) are refining their technique and making beautiful music.

Brunswick Novant Medical Center Foundation Announces First Golf Tournament

BOLIVIA, N.C. — The Brunswick Novant Medical Center Foundation will host its first golf tournament at Lockwood Folly Country Club on Friday, October 12. All proceeds from the golf tournament will support the BNMC Foundation’s Women and Children’s Wellness Outreach Initiative.

The 18-hole golf classic will begin with registration and breakfast from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Following breakfast, an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start is planned for the captain’s choice tournament. The tournament will also include men and women’s categories for closest to the pin, closest to the center line, longest drive, hole-in-one contests, and a putting competition. Mulligans will be available to golfers.

“Second Cast” takes home top prize in Southport-Oak Island Chamber’s Flounder Classic

SOUTHPORT, NC — Second Cast took home top prize in the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce’s 3rd Annual Cape Fear Flounder Classic with a 10.10 pound flounder.   Captain Tim Lee from Fayetteville and his crew, Yogie Martin, Mike Clark and John Balentine enthusiastically took home a prize of $3,036.   Captain Dale Darnell & crew member Mervin Darnell of the Matt D captured the second-place prize of $1,621 with a 7.65 pound flounder, while Captain Lawrence Bennet and Chris Aman took third place with a 6.20 pound flounder, earning a prize of $914.  The 2012 Cape Fear Flounder Classic pay-out totaled $7,370 in cash.

Leadership Brunswick County accepting applications

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. – Leadership Brunswick County, a program sponsored by Brunswick Community College and the Southport-Oak Island Area, North Brunswick and Brunswick County Chambers of Commerce, is now accepting applications for its upcoming program.  Leadership Brunswick County was formed to develop corps of informed, committed and qualified individuals capable of providing dynamic leadership for Brunswick County.  It is designed to identify highly-motivated, emerging leaders and educate them about the needs of our community, as well as the dynamics of social and economic changes.

Robert Ruark Inn, Bed & Breakfast in Southport Earns ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from TripAdvisor

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The Robert Ruark Inn, located in coastal Southport’s historic district recently earned a Certificate of Excellence Award from TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site.

According to TripAdvisor, the certificate program honors hospitality excellence and is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor’s website. Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce holds ribbon cutting for Winey Bear

Brunswick Nuclear Plan Exercise Scheduled for August 7

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – State and local emergency management officials next week will join representatives from Progress Energy in an exercise of the emergency response plans for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant near Southport on Tuesday, August 7. The federally-graded exercise is conducted every two years to test emergency procedures at the plant and in the county and state government agencies as required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Column: Now is the Time to Prepare for 2012

I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to believe that we are already in late October.  2011 has flown by, and 2012 will be here before we know it.

If you are a business owner or organizational leader, now is the time to begin preparing for 2012.

While many retail businesses and other businesses that sell consumer products are gearing up for their busiest time of the year (the Christmas shopping season), many companies that offer professional services or sell primarily to other businesses are entering what is often a down time.

Opinion: Reflecting on 9/11 and my trip to New York City in October of 2001

This Sunday marks ten years since the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  Like you, I will never forget that day.

Below is an article I wrote on October 11, 2001, shortly after returning from a trip to New York City following the 9/11 attacks.  The article is entitled An Unimaginable Experience in New York City.  I hope you will take a few minutes to read it and join me in reflecting on 9/11 and the impact it has had on our nation.

Brunswick Nuclear Plant to test sirens July 13

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Tests of the public notification sirens located within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant will be conducted Wednesday, July 13 starting at 10 a.m. The tests are part of Progress Energy’s comprehensive emergency planning program performed in cooperation with the State of North Carolina and Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

ATMC awards $25,000 in community grants

SHALLOTTE, N.C. — ATMC has awarded Community Connections grant funds totaling $25,000 to 17 organizations serving Brunswick County. The cooperative recently honored its sixth annual community grant recipients with a reception at ATMC’s corporate headquarters in Shallotte. Representatives from each organization talked about the programs for which the grant funds were rewarded and how these grants will positively impact area residents.

Leland Mayor Walter Futch presents South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club with Key to the City at Leland Area Rotary Club installation banquet

LELAND, N.C. – Leland Mayor Walter Futch presented the South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club with a key to the city at the Leland Area Rotary Club’s annual officer installation banquet, held June 30, 2011 at Magnolia Greens Golf Course in Leland.  The presentation was made in recognition of the South Brunswick Islands Rotary Club’s invaluable contributions and assistance to the Leland Area Rotary Club.

Leland Area Rotary Club presents Rotarian of the Year and Service Above Self awards

LELAND, N.C. – The Leland Area Rotary Club announced the recipients of its Rotarian of the Year and Service Above Self (Volunteer of the Year) awards at its annual officer installation banquet, held June 30, 2011 at Magnolia Greens Golf Course in Leland.  Charter president George Murray was named Rotarian of the Year, and outgoing board member Pat Batleman received the Service Above Self Award.  Batleman served as the club’s Service Projects Chair for 2010-11.  Both awards were selected by a secret ballot of Leland Area Rotary Club members.

The Southport Times Acquires Rare Civil War Document

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — The Southport Times announces the acquisition of a rare civil war document from Smithville, NC. For those who may not be aware, prior to becoming Southport, the area was called Smithville. In 1887, the city changed its name to Southport in anticipation of becoming a major Southern port for the State of North Carolina.

NCDOT to hold public meeting June 28 for proposed widening of NC 211 in Brunswick County

ST. JAMES, N.C. –The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, June 28 regarding the proposed widening of N.C. 211 near St. James in Brunswick County.

The meeting will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the St. James Community Center, 4136 Southport-Supply Road SE in St. James. NCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and receive comments about the proposed project. A formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The presentation will consist of an explanation of the proposed location and design, right-of-way acquisition, relocation requirements and procedures and the state-federal funding relationship.

Brunswick Community Hospital Announces July 31 Opening for Brunswick Novant Medical Center

SUPPLY, N.C. — Brunswick Community Hospital leaders have announced plans to open the new Brunswick Novant Medical Center, which will feature 78 beds and all private rooms, on Sunday, July 31.

“We are excited about opening the new hospital in a county where local residents have so passionately declared the need for increased access to healthcare,” said Denise Mihal, Brunswick Community Hospital president.  “Our leaders, physicians, nurses and staff will work to ensure that this hospital lives up to the community’s expectations and that it is a model of patient care both locally and across the state.”

North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce releases results of 2011 Citizen Survey

LELAND, N.C. — The North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce recently conducted an online citizen survey to obtain citizens’ input and feedback on issues that impact northern Brunswick County, including the state of the economy, the proposed port in Southport, residents’ shopping habits and the greatest challenges facing northern Brunswick County.  A total of 237 people completed the survey.

North Brunswick High School students receive scholarships from Communities in Schools

LELAND, N.C. — Communities In Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) awarded $1,000 scholarships to five graduating seniors at North Brunswick County High School during this year’s senior awards ceremony. Recipients were interviewed and scored based on academics, school activities, community involvement, financial need, and interview presentation.

CIS partners with local businesses, industries, civic clubs, agencies, communities of faith and individuals to provide these scholarships.

Dr. Eric Lescault and Dr. Michael Marushack to Present Free Seminar on Hip and Knee Replacement May 26 in Leland

LELAND, N.C. — At a free seminar on Thursday, May 26, at 2:30 pm, in Leland, Dr. Eric Lescault and Dr. Michael Marushack of Orthopaedic Specialists will share information on the latest advancements in hip and knee replacement surgeries.

Brunswick Arts Council hasting grant-writing workshop on May 19

SUPPLY, N.C. — The Brunswick Arts Council is hosting a grant -writing workshop on Thursday, May 19 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the Brunswick Electric Membership building, located at 795 Ocean Highway West, Supply, NC.

The workshop will focus on the grant-writing process for the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program.  Jon Tait, President of the Brunswick Arts Council’s Grants & Development Division, and Leigh Ann Wilder, Regional Coordinator for the North Carolina Arts Council, will educate attendees on (1) grant eligibility, (2) submission deadlines, (3) what the funds may be used for, (4) priorities for funding, (5) funding policies and (6) reporting requirements.

The Southport Times Acquires Scarce Boiling Spring Lakes Postcard

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — The Southport Times has acquired a scarce 1963 postcard of the actual boiling spring in Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, the namesake of the small city in Southeastern North Carolina.

Boiling Spring Lakes was originally developed by Reeves Telecom in the early 1960s. In the early stages of development a spring was discovered hidden in a wooded ravine. It was later determined that this spring produced an astonishing 43,000,000 gallons of water per day. The rate at which the water spewed from the spring gave the appearance of a “boiling” effect. This spring later became a main source for the centerpiece lake, in the aptly named city of Boiling Spring Lakes.

Angela Thompson, MD, to Offer Free Seminar on Women’s Health

Leland Area Rotary Club’s inaugural “LA Classic” Golf Tournament raises $3,900 for charity

LELAND, N.C. – The Leland Area Rotary Club’s inaugural “LA Classic” Golf Tournament, held Thursday, April 14 at Magnolia Greens Golf Course in Leland, raised nearly $3,900 in net proceeds that will benefit Communities in Schools of Brunswick County, the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross and Rotary International’s $200 million challenge to eradicate polio worldwide.
