Lowe’s Reports Fourth Quarter Sales and Earnings Results – Board of Directors Authorizes Repurchase of up to $5 Billion of the Company’s Common Stock

(NYSE: LOW), the world’s second largest home improvement retailer, today reported net earnings of $205 million for the quarter ended January 29, 2010, a 26.5 percent increase from the same period a year ago. Diluted earnings per share increased 27.3 percent to $0.14 from $0.11 in the fourth quarter of 2008. For the fiscal year ended January 29, 2010, net earnings declined 18.8 percent to $1.78 billion and diluted earnings per share also declined 18.8 percent to $1.21.

Mortgage Rates Decline To Lowest Level This Year

The thirty-year fixed mortgage rate on Zillow Mortgage Marketplace is currently 4.79 percent, down two basis points from 4.81 percent at this time last week, and at the lowest level since mid-December of last year. The 30-year fixed mortgage rate hovered below 4.85 for most of the last week, but peaked near 4.90 percent on Thursday and Friday.

Zillow’s real-time mortgage rates are based on thousands of custom mortgage quotes submitted daily to anonymous borrowers through the site, and reflect the most recent changes in the market. These are not marketing rates or a weekly survey.

National Weather Service Names Brunswick Community Hospital as North Carolina’s Second StormReady Hospital

State Health Program To Enroll People with Pre-existing Medical Conditions

TABOR CITY, NC – William Roy admits his weight used to be an issue, and he has Type 2 Diabetes. When his employer stopped offering health insurance, Roy found he was uninsurable by traditional insurers.

“Nobody wanted to take me in so I was one of the Americans without health insurance,” said Roy, a minister with Old Zion Wesleyan Church.

Opinion: No Dogs Allowed

North Carolina could soon prohibit dog owners from bringing their canine friends to restaurants.  This would even include outdoor dining areas.

The state’s Commission for Public Health has proposed a rule, which as written, would create this ban.  The agency, however, has explained that their goal isn’t to ban dogs in outdoor areas, but unfortunately, this is exactly what their rule would do.

LabCorp to Bring 346 Jobs to Greensboro

Greensboro, NC – Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings Inc., a national provider of medical laboratory testing services, will open a new billing operations office in Guilford County.  The company will create 346 jobs and invest $4 million during the next three years in Greensboro.  The project was made possible in part by a $275,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

At least 40 states have established ethics commissions, which are state agencies charged with overseeing the conduct of elected or appointed public servants.  The mission of the various ethics commissions is essentially the same nationwide: to investigate alleged violations of ethics law, issue penalties for financial disclosure violations, educate “covered persons” on ethics laws that apply to them, and refer violations of ethics law to the appropriate law enforcement agencies when those violations rise to the level of criminal misconduct.

Five Credit Unions Unite to Ensure No-Surcharge ATM Benefits for 12,000 NC National Guard Personnel Worldwide!

Raleigh, NC – Four credit unions with military ties have signed Bilateral Agreements with State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) to help ensure NC National Guard personnel have access to no-surcharge Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) worldwide.  SECU signed agreements with Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union, Marine Federal Credit Union, Navy Federal Credit Union and Pentagon Federal Credit Union that will allow Guardsmen to utilize more than 1,600 no-surcharge ATMs.  Whether serving in Guam, Japan, or stateside in locations such as Quantico, Virginia or Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Guardsmen will save as much as $3 per ATM transaction with the elimination of the surcharge fee!  The move is part of SECU’s ongoing effort to assist military personnel and thank them for their continuous efforts to serve our Country.  Military members at all five credit unions will also have surcharge-free access to all of SECU’s Cash Points ATM network, with over 1,000 ATM locations in North Carolina.
