RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol along with the Wildlife Resources Commission and the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division are combing efforts in saving lives this summer. Whether on the road or on the water, law enforcement officers across the state will be on the look out for impaired drivers by conducting DWI checkpoints near recreational boating areas as well as public service announcements that  educate motorists on the dangers of drinking and driving.

Highway Patrol Encouraging Motorists to Slow Down During the Labor Day Holiday

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to be careful as they enjoy the Labor Day holiday. Motorists who slow down and travel at posted speeds will not only increase their chances of arriving at their destination safely but they will also conserve fuel.

There will be an increased presence of troopers on the interstates and major four lane highways.

The New School Year Brings Increased Education and Enforcement from Highway Patrol

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Highway Patrol will be focusing on education and enforcement. Troopers across the state will be educating teenage drivers by implementing teenage driver safety plans and will be working with school administrators in offering any assistance in the area of highway safety. Education however is just one part of the solution. Increased enforcement visibility in and around all school zones will be observed.

“Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” nets 1,192 arrests

RALEIGH, N.C. — State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced today that state and local law enforcement officers cited 1,192 motorists for driving while impaired during the “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign, which ran June 27-July 4. A total of 42,997 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide.

“The Governor’s Highway Safety Program, along with state and local law enforcement officers worked hard during this campaign to remove drunk drivers and other violators from our roads,” Conti said. “Safety is our top priority and this effort shows there are serious consequences to drinking and driving.”

“Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign kicked off yesterday

RALEIGH, N.C. – N.C. Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced yesterday that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in force over the Fourth of July holiday as part of the “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign. Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will be conducted Monday, June 27 through Monday, July 4, across the state in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

“Driving while impaired puts everyone on the roads at risk”, Conti said.  “If you have anything to drink, please find a safe ride home.”

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina steps down

RALEIGH, N.C. — George E.B. Holding, who has served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina since June 2006, today announced he was stepping down his position effective July 8, 2011.

Previously, Holding served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney during the tenure of former US Attorney Frank D. Whitney from 2002 to 2006.

“Click It or Ticket” campaign begins today

RALEIGH, N.C. — N.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Conti announced today the launch of a state-wide “Click It or Ticket” campaign to crack down on motorists who are not wearing their seat belts. State and local law enforcement officers will increase seat belt enforcement activities during the campaign, which runs May 23-June 5.

“This life-saving campaign reminds us to buckle up, every trip, every time,” said Conti. “Wearing a seat belt no matter where you are seated in a vehicle is the law in North Carolina, so I remind all citizens to Click it or Ticket.”

Highway Patrol concludes “Operation Drive to Live” campaign

Brunswick Nuclear Plant to test sirens at full volume

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The annual full-volume test of the public notification sirens located within 10 miles of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant will be conducted Wednesday, November 18 starting at 10 a.m. The test is part of Progress Energy’s comprehensive emergency planning program performed in cooperation with the State of North Carolina and Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

During this test, all of the sirens will sound at the same time for three-minute intervals. The sirens are tested on a regular basis to ensure the system is in good working order. A full-volume test is conducted once per calendar year.
