Southport-Oak Island Chamber seeks musicians & entertainers for new event

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — On May 19 the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Southport will launch a new bi-monthly event called “Shop to the Beat”.

Shop to the Beat” will position music or entertainment throughout the business district outside and near participating merchants.   Participating merchants and restaurants will add to the evening by having specials or merchandising games during “Shop to the Beat”.

N.C. DMV seeks applications for new license plate agency in Southport

RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is seeking applicants to operate a license plate agency in the Southport area. The current lease for the agency has expired and is open for renewal.

The agency currently located at 4831 Port Loop Road, Unit 2 will continue to operate on a month-to-month basis until a new contract is established. DMV’s policy is to seek new applicants whenever a contract expires or ends.

Ports Authority: proposed terminal in Southport “on hold”

SOUTHPORT, N.C. — In the wake of mounting opposition to the proposed N.C. International Terminal (NCIT) at Southport, the N.C. State Ports Authority announced today that it is placing the project on hold.

Southport, NC – A procession of princesses from across the county traveled through a winder wonderland to attend the sold-out 2nd Annual Little Princess Ball with the special men in their lives. A joint venture by Brunswick County Parks and Recreation and Communities In Schools (CIS), the Ball attracted over two hundred fifty kindergarten to fifth grade girls and their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other male role models. “For two hours my daughter had my undivided attention, something that doesn’t happen every day,” said CIS Board Member Alan Cheatham whose daughter Catherine attends Union Elementary School. “Girls from every walk of life were made to feel like princesses, and every man there can be proud of having taken the time to make them feel that way.”

ADM Increases Cash Dividend

Southport, NC – The Board of Directors of Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM) today declared a cash dividend of 15 cents per share on the Company’s stock payable March 11, 2010, to Stockholders of record February 18, 2010. This is an increase of one cent a share.

This is ADM’s 313th consecutive quarterly payment, a record of 78 years of uninterrupted dividends. As of December 31, 2009, there were 642,567,973 shares of ADM stock outstanding.

Dosher Memorial Hospital Watchful as Flu Season Approaches

According to Kirk Singer, hospital spokesperson, this particular flu season will especially require special attention, due to the nationwide spread of the H1N1 virus earlier this year. “The segment of the population expected to be impacted by the H1N1 strain will be different from those who are typically affected by the seasonal flu,” he said.

Southport-Oak Island Chamber announces winners of Golf Classic

SOUTHPORT-OAK ISLAND, NC — The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce’s Golf Classic was held May 2 at Oak Island Golf & Country Club.   A field of 35 teams participated in the event, which benefits the Chamber.

Southport-Oak Island Chamber holding “Wine & Die” mystery dinner theater & auction fundraiser on May 28

SOUTHPORT, NC — According to an e-mail from the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce, “murder, intrigue, wine and good food will be served up” at the Chamber’s “Wine and Die” Mystery Dinner Theater & Auction.  The event, a fundraiser for the Chamber, is set for Thursday, May 28 from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at the Southport Community Building.

The event will feature hors d’oeuvres and entrees prepared by the chefs of the ACF (American Culinary Federation) Cape Fear Chefs, as well as a variety of auction items and a cash bar.  A limited number of tickets are available.

Proposed Jonas Creek development currently under review by Southport planning board

SOUTHPORT, NC –  Jonas Creek, a proposed residential community within a stone’s throw of Southport’s historic waterfront, marina, and shops, is currently uder review by the City of Southport’s Planning Board.

According to a press release, land planners Haden Stanziale and engineering firm Withers and Ravenel, both of Wilmington, have “laid the groundwork for the community to integrate itself within the existing street pattern and historic architectural character of the town”.

Half of Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry runs suspended today

SOUTHPORT, NC — The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division suspended half of the runs at the Southport-Ft. Fisher route today while mechanics work to fix the steering on the Motor Vessel Fort Fisher. An amended schedule has been implemented until the problem is fixed.

The amended schedule is as follows:
-  From Southport, departure times are 5:30 a.m., 7, 7:45, 9:15, 10:45, 1:45 p.m., 3:15, 4:45 and 6:15.
-  Departing from Fort Fisher, the times are 6:15 a.m., 7:45, 8:30, 10, 11:30, 2:30 p.m., 4, 5:30 and 7.

Southport-Oak Island Chamber’s Oak Island Lighthouse 10k & 5K attracts record number of participants

The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce’s 11th Annual Oak Island Lighthouse 10K & 5K run/walk was held Saturday, April 18 at the N.C. Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell. The event, which benefitted from blue skies and a light breeze, attracted a record 420 participants.

Southport-Oak Island Chamber’s 4th of July Festival Committee accepting applicants for main stage entertainment; parade applications now available

SOUTHPORT, NC — The N.C. 4th of July Festival’s entertainment committee is accepting applications for entertainment groups who are willing to play for free on the festival’s main stage.  Community entertainers will play on the festival’s main stage, located in the parking lot at Waterfront Park in Southport, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday, July 3 and 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.  Interested groups are encouraged to call The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce at 910-457-6964.  Groups will be asked to provide the name of the group, contact information, type of entertainment, date preference and a Web site if available.
