The study found that nearly half of feature phone subscribers who acquired a device during April 2012 switched to a smartphone, an increase of 9.5 percentage points from the previous year, as smartphone adoption continues its upward climb in the U.S. Among this audience, 61.5 percent of consumers acquired devices running the Google Android platform, with 25.2 percent choosing Apple devices and 7.1 percent opting for Microsoft smartphones.

Kodak Alleges Patent Infringement by Apple and RIM

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) announced that it has filed lawsuits against Apple Inc. and Research In Motion Limited (RIM) alleging the infringement of Kodak digital imaging technology.

“Our primary interest is not to disrupt the availability of any product but to obtain fair compensation for the use of our technology”
.The Kodak complaint, filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), specifically claims that Apple’s iPhones and RIM’s camera-enabled BlackBerry devices infringe a Kodak patent that covers technology related to a method for previewing images. Separately, Kodak filed two suits today against Apple in U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York that claim the infringement of patents related to digital cameras and certain computer processes.

Verizon Wireless Invests Nearly $39 Million in 2009 to Enhance Kentucky Network

LOUISVILLE, KY – Verizon Wireless announced today it invested nearly $39 million in 2009 to enhance its digital network in Kentucky. The enhancements included building 15 new cell sites and upgrading equipment on several existing cell sites to increase coverage and capacity of the company’s voice and 3G high-speed wireless network.
“While other wireless service providers played catch up this year building out parts of their high-speed wireless network, we already had that 3G foundation in place across the state,” said Greg Haller, president-Kentucky/Indiana/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. “Consequently, this year we focused on increasing capacity across our 3G network in Kentucky, enabling us to stay ahead of our customers’ increasing demands for fast and secure wireless data services.”
Since the company was formed in 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $307 million on improvements to its network in Kentucky, including the following upgrades made in 2009:
  –  Fifteen new cell sites were activated statewide to improve network
      coverage and capacity, enabling more customers to use their phones
      concurrently to make voice calls; send and receive email and text,
      picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality
      videos; and download music, games and ringtones, while enjoying
      clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.
  –  Performance-based equipment was installed at several cell sites across
      Kentucky, thereby doubling capacity of the company’s advanced 3G
      high-speed wireless network as well as improving its speed and
      performance.
  –  Permanent backup generators were installed at 49 Kentucky cell sites
      to ensure network functionality during times of crisis.
  –  The former Cellular One network in Danville, London, Maysville,
      Richmond, Somerset and Winchester — which included 86 cell sites –
      was upgraded and converted to Verizon Wireless’ high-speed 3G network,
      providing customers with clearer reception, fewer dropped calls and
      more coverage, including stronger in-building coverage.

Rebates Available For Equipment That Reduces Diesel Truck Emissions

RALEIGH, NC – State environmental officials have $517,500 available for rebates on equipment and new long-haul trucks that reduce emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines, with funds provided under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009. 

The Environmental Protection Agency allocated ARRA – Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, or DERA, funding to the states as part of the national economic stimulus plan. The N.C. Division of Air Quality is coordinating the rebate program in North Carolina. DAQ is administering more than $1.7 million in ARRA funds for various air-related projects.

N.C. regulators approve Progress Energy’s Plans for Natural Gas fueled power plant

progress-energyRALEIGH, NC  –  The NC Utilities Commission (NCUC) has approved Progress Energy Carolinas’ plan to build new natural gas-fueled power generation in Wayne County, to replace a coal-fired plant that the utility will retire in 2013.

The commission today approved a certificate of public convenience and necessity for Progress Energy Carolinas’ proposed 950-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power plant near the site of the H.F. Lee coal-fired plant. The company announced its plan to retire the plant’s three coal-fired units Aug. 18, and filed the certificate request the same day. The streamlined review process was authorized by legislation approved by the N.C. General Assembly in July.

North Carolina Breaks into Top 10 Nanotech States

RALEIGH, NC – A new study shows that North Carolina has broken into the top 10 states in the nation with the highest concentration of nanotechnology companies, universities, research laboratories and organizations, and that Raleigh has moved into the top 5 cities designated as “Nano Metro” clusters. 
 
The data was released by the Project on Emerging Technologies, which is a partnership between the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Pew Charitable Trusts. This is the first time North Carolina has been a top-ranked nanotechnology region.
 
“Nanotechnology is fundamental to North Carolina’s economic development strategy of growing jobs and building a new economy,” Perdue said. “As one of the top 10 nanotech states, North Carolina will continue to push ahead and lead a technology sector that will change every industry and create products that will change the way we live.”
 
The data was released by the Project on Emerging Technologies and features more than 1,200 organizations across the United States that are part of the nanotechnology industry.  North Carolina joins California, Massachusetts, New York and Texas as one of the top 10 states.
