Wilmington, N.C. – The Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau [CVB] is pleased to announce that two of its sales team members, Molly Johnson and Joel Smith, currently serve on 2021 travel trade association boards. Joel Smith is also recognized as NC SGMP’s 2020-2021 Supplier of the Year.
Senior Sales Manager Joel Smith, MPRTSM, has been awarded the North Carolina Society of Government Meeting Planners [NC SGMP] Supplier of the Year award for 2020-2021. The Supplier of the Year Award recognizes one supplier-member who represents excellence in the government meeting planning profession, contributes to chapter events and operations, and works to further the mission of the chapter. Joel is currently serving a second term on NC SGMP’s 2021 Board of Directors as 2nd Vice-President. SGMP is a national association for individuals involved in planning government meetings and for the companies who provide facilities or services to those planners. NC SGMP’s mission is to enhance the knowledge and expertise of government meeting professionals, with objectives to improve the quality and promote the cost-effectiveness of government meetings. Smith joined the Wilmington and Beaches CVB in 2017. In his role as senior sales manager, Joel covers the sports, government, corporate, and SMERF (social, military, education, religion & fraternal) group markets.
Director of Convention Sales Molly Johnson, CMP, is currently serving as the 2021 President-Elect for the Southeast Chapter of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), the leading global community and educator for Business Event Strategists. Johnson will serve in this role during 2021, followed by a one-year term as PCMA Southeast Chapter President in 2022, and a one-year term as Immediate Past President in 2023. Previously she served on PCMA’s Global Advocacy Task Force. PCMA is the leading global community and educator for Business Event Strategists. The principal purpose of the Southeast Chapter of PCMA, which covers AL, FL, GA, KY, NC, SC, TN and PR, is to increase the effectiveness of meetings and conventions through member industry education and promotion of the value of the meetings industry in the Southeast Region.
With three decades of experience in the hospitality industry, Molly Johnson joined the Wilmington and Beaches CVB in 2015. In addition to PCMA, other professional memberships include: Member of Meeting Planners International Carolinas Chapter [MPI-CC] since 2002, serving as chapter president in 2010-2011 and currently as a member of MPI’s Global Chapter and Membership Advisory Council. Johnson is a past recipient of the MPI-CC Hall of Fame Award (2018), President’s Award (2017), and Supplier of the Year Award (2014). She is also a member of Meetings Mean Business and the Wilmington Area Hospitality Association [WAHA, past president].
